작가노트

 낯선 곳에서의 삶과 경험은 익숙한 대상들을 다른 시선에서 바라보게 한다. 최미영 작가는 지난 10년간 영국 런던에서 활동하면서 익숙하면서도 낯선 것들에 대한 탐구를 추상적인 색과 형태로 만들어 내곤 했다. 우리의 일상과 더 가까워지면서 작가의 최근 관심사는 작가의 공간으로 이동 배치되면서 직간접적으로 주제를 재해석하며 고정된 틀에서 벗어나 확장 되어가고 있다.  

 ‘하늘’을 중심으로 대상에 대한 추상적인 접근 너머의 일상과 연관시킨 작업을 선보인다. 하늘이라고 하는  일상 속의 익숙한 대상은 작가의 작업에서 인간의 손길이 닿지 않은 자연물인 동시에 현시대가 당면하고 있는 이슈들을 상징적으로 보여주는 공간이자 소재이다. 그 어디를 가도 존재하는 하늘, 그리고 그 위에서의 로켓이나 연은 그림에서 이중적이고 우화적인 표현의 상징으로써 자연의 순결함과 인간의 활동으로 인한 현시대의 긴장감을 대조적으로 그리고 있다. 작품의 제목들은 이러한 시사점들을 더 선명하게 보여주는 역할을 한다.

 화폭에서 연출된 하늘이라고 하는 대상의 색과 형태 그리고 캔버스 표면에 나타나는 붓질은 대상을 모호하게 만들기도 하지만 보이는 이로부터 또 다른 해석을 이끌어 낸다. 적색과 청색이 다른 분위기와 소재 간의 상관관계를 은유적으로 담아내고 있듯이, 언제나 푸르를 것 만 같은 하늘은 감성과 이성의 공존을 이끌어 내는 곳 이자, 소리 없는 전쟁터가 되기도 한다.  

 Life and experience in a strange place can allow someone to look at familiar objects from different perspectives. Mi-young Choi has been working in London for the last 10 years, creating abstract colours and shapes from familiar things with  unfamiliar insight. As the artist’s recent interest get closer to aspects of our daily lives, the subject shifts to the artist’s space, directly and indirectly reinterpreting the subject and expanding its meaning beyond a fixed framework.
  The artist presents works that relate to everyday life beyond abstract approaches to the subject. The sky is a familiar presence of everyday life, and a natural phenomenon that has not been touched by human beings. It is material, and a space that symbolizes the issues of the present era is facing. The sky exists everywhere, but the rocket and kite within it are a symbol of dual and allegorical expression in the paintings, contrasting the purity of nature with the tensions of the present era caused by human activity. The titles of the works serve to make these implications clearer.
  The colour and shape of the object, the sky on the canvas, and the brush strokes layered on it make the subject obscure, but also lead to another interpretation from the viewer. As red and blue metaphorically capture the interrelationship between different moods and materials, the “ever-green” sky becomes a place of interest and silent battle, where emotion and rational thoughts coexist.
